eggs and icons

The beautiful tradition of the Egg has come to us through the ages. An Egg is the Source of Life. It has always been the object of religious adoration. It symbolizes life, sun, happiness, and fertility. In the East, a gift of a beautifully painted or encrusted with gold and jewels Egg, was given to the newly married-to ensure fertility; to the very young as a symbol of love and security; and often to the bereaved to let them know that friends were with them in darkness as well as in sunshine and to assure the happy reincarnation of the departed one.
As a gift to a friend, it shows the affection and respect that lay deeply in the heart of the giver.
In the Egyptian hieroglyphs, an egg symbolizes potential, a life-giving seed, a mystery of being.
In the Orthodox traditions, the colored egg is the main symbol of Easter. Following the tradition, Russians give each other painted eggs for Easter. Even the Tsar's family owned richly painted porcelain Eggs. With time, the Egg became objet d'art, because it was decorated in such a sophisticated manner.
All history of Russia before Bolsheviks can be traced in the icons. Today, the new Russian Orthodox icons look just like the old ones. Everything has been preserved - imagery, techniques, choice of materials and paint ingredients.
Traditionally, there are two distinct types of icons - the individual Saints, and scenes from the Scripture.
The Patriarch of Moscow and of all Russia runs an icon manufactory in Sofrino, near Moscow. That is where we acquire our icons. They are created by real monks of the monastery in Sofrino, and each one is blessed by an Orthodox priest.
Usually, the Orthodox icons are painted on wooden panels, with a golden or silver leaf applied to the background. The outline is etched in, the dark colors are applied before the light ones to create a two-dimentional effect. The icon is then varnished with a mixture of linseed oil. The varnish brightens the colors at first, but later makes them darker, creating an older look.
All images and background are abstracted from real life detail to emphasize the spiritual aspect of this genre.
